8 Covenants of Beautiful Skin

Cov e nant
noun [kuhv-uh-nuh nt]: A commitment to engage in, or refrain from, specified actions

1. Never go to bed wearing makeup.

Even if you wind up sleeping on your best friend’s cousin’s boyfriend’s couch, always clean your face before you go down for the count.  Carry cleansing wipes in your handbag just for that reason.  Sh*t happens; plan for it!

It’s also a good idea to keep cleansing wipes at  your bedside for those nights when you’re just too exhausted for your nightly skincare routine.
2. Speaking of the bed… get in yours and sleep 7-8 hours every night.

It’s called ‘beauty sleep’ for a reason!  Your skin needs sleep for cellular renewal.  Not getting at least 7 hours of sleep results in collagen breakdown, dark circles and dull, lacklustre skin.  Not exactly the look we’re going for.. now is it?

3. Wear sunscreen. Every. Single. Day.

Unless the stars are out, you need to be wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen/moisturizer with an SPF of at least 30.  Although we all need a little sunshine everyday to boost our vitamin D levels, unprotected sun exposure causes lasting damage to your skin.  Wrinkles, fine lines, sun spots, broken capillaries, leathery texture.   Umm..no thanks!

4. Include skin-healthy foods at each meal.

Eat foods rich in antioxidants and Omega 3’s, such as oranges, tomatoes, spinach, avocados, nuts, salmon and beans.  Following a balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals, healthy fats, and fiber will not only lead to better health, but glowing, radiant skin.  A nutrient-poor diet typically results in dryness, puffiness, clogged pores and premature aging.

5. Exercise at least 30 minutes a day, breaking a sweat, 3 to 5 times a week.

Cardiovascular exercise improves circulation, transporting oxygen and nutrients to the skin.  Sweating also helps flush out impurities and clear pores.  Remember to drink lots of water during your workout and always wear sunscreen when exercising outdoors.

6. Drink at least 64 ounces of plain water every day.

Rule of thumb:  Drink half your body weight in fluid ounces of water daily.  So, a 150 pound person should be drinking about 75 ounces of agua every day.  Also try your best to limit, or preferably eliminate, sugary sodas and artificially sweetened beverages.  They provide nothing but empty calories, chemicals and sodium.

7. If you drink alcohol, limit your consumption

While a nightly glass of wine or a cocktail might actually be beneficial (yay!), 3 or 4 definitely isn’t (boo!).  Research indicates that women should consume no more than 6 ounces of wine, 1 ounce of alcohol or 12 ounces of beer per day.

8. And for the love of everything holy… No cigarettes!  Ever!  Seriously.

Smoking constricts the blood vessels, reducing blood flow to the skin, depleting it of oxygen and other nutrients.  Smoking also reduces the collagen level in your skin which leads to premature aging.  They’re stinky, expensive, and deadly.  ‘Nuff said.

(And, yes my darlings, the ciggys you bum from your friends count!)
